What To Serve With Baked Ziti

All sorts of soups, salads and breads would make excellent sides for baked ziti.  Here are a few of our favorites:

Key Ingredients

  • Ziti Pasta – you want to be sure and only cook your pasta to al dente since it will be baked again.  This prevents the pasta from getting mushy.  You could even use gluten-free pasta, chickpea pasta or lentil pasta if you want to make this a little more “healthy.”
  • Onion – you can use either yellow or white onions for this recipe.
  • Garlic – fresh minced tastes best.
  • Ground Beef – you can also substitute Italian sausage if you would like, or eliminate completely to make the recipe vegetarian.
  • Spaghetti Sauce – use your favorite kind of spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, marinara sauce or pasta sauce.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – you can purchase pre-shredded, or shred yourself.
  • Provolone Cheese – we use slices, but you can also purchase a block and shred your own.  In that case, you would want 1 ½ cups of shredded provolone.
  • Sour Cream – any kind will work great, or you can substitute ricotta cheese.
  • Parmesan Cheese – freshly grated will taste best.
  • Basil – fresh basil works the best.  It adds a nice freshness to the dish that dried basil just won’t be able to replace.

How to Make This Easy Baked Ziti

  1. Cook the pasta. Cook pasta in boiling salted water to “al dente.”
  2. Make the beef sauce. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the onions and garlic until softened. Add the hamburger meat and brown—about 5-8 minutes. Add the spaghetti sauce and simmer for about 5 minutes, then remove from the heat.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  3. Assemble. In a lightly greased 9″ x 13″ casserole dish, add about half of the cooked pasta. Top with half of the mozzarella cheese and the provolone slices.  Spread the sour cream evenly on top of the cheeses. Pour half of the meat sauce over the sour cream, then add the remaining pasta, the remaining sauce and the remaining mozzarella cheese.  Finish by sprinkling the Parmesan cheese and fresh basil evenly over the top.
  4. Bake. Bake in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the spaghetti sauce is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown.  Remove the baking dish from the oven and let cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.  Enjoy!
