Prosciutto Wrapped Figs

One of the reasons I love Italian food so much is because it celebrates simplicity. This fall appetizer is the perfect example—sweet fresh figs wrapped in prosciutto with Gorgonzola cheese and honey. Just four ingredients, but the amount of flavor in each bite will blow you away.

If you’re not a huge fan of Gorgonzola cheese, goat cheese will also taste great. These are the perfect appetizers to serve at a fall or winter party because they are super elegant but also take just a few minutes to prep.

While this recipe is intended to be served cold or room temperature, you could easily turn this into a warm appetizer by tossing them into a 425 degree oven for a few minutes.

How to make figs wrapped in prosciutto for an easy appetizer.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Figs – when choosing fresh figs, try and find ones that are nice and plump with a little bit of give to them. You want them to still be slightly firm and definitely not soft or mushy. They will ripen over the course of a couple of days at home, so don’t buy them too far in advance.
  • Prosciutto – each slice of salty prosciutto will be sliced in half lengthwise before wrapping it around the fig.
  • Gorgonzola Cheese – Gorgonzola cheese is a classic pairing for figs and honey. It’s a little salty but has a more mild flavor than other blue cheeses. Goat cheese or another type of blue cheese would also work great.
  • Honey – if you have a high quality or local honey, this is a perfect recipe to use it for! Otherwise, any kind of honey you have will work well. The sticky sweetness is a delicious finish for this appetizer.

How to Make Figs Wrapped in Prosciutto

  1. Prepare the figs and prosciutto. Wash, dry, and slice each fig in half. Slice each piece of prosciutto in half lengthwise.
  2. Assemble and wrap the figs. Line up the fig halves on a flat surface or cutting board with the cut side up. Place about 1/2 tablespoon of Gorgonzola cheese onto the top of each fig, then take a slice of prosciutto and carefully wrap in all the way around the fig so that it covers the cheese.
  3. Serve. Transfer the figs wrapped in prosciutto to a serving platter and finish with a little drizzle of honey over each. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

What other toppings could I use?

Besides honey, you could top each prosciutto wrapped fig with a little flakey sea salt, EVOO, or balsamic vinegar.

Can this be served warm?

Yes! This would taste great as a warm appetizer, too. Just place the wrapped figs on a baking sheet and cook for about 5-10 minutes in a 425 degree oven. Remove and cool slightly, then serve with honey.

How do you know when figs are ripe?

When you are picking out your fresh figs, gently squeeze them between your fingers. They shouldn’t be at all soft or mushy, but should have a little bit of give to them. If they are very firm, you can bring them home and let them ripen for a couple of days at room temperature.
