Fig and Prosciutto Crostini

This is one of those appetizers that looks super fancy, but actually takes just a few minutes to prepare. While they can’t exactly be made ahead of time, it really doesn’t even matter because all you are doing is toasting the bread and assembling the ingredients.

Each slice of French baguette is toasted and then topped with creamy Gorgonzola cheese, salty prosciutto, fresh sliced figs, sweet honey, and toasted pistachios. A few ingredients, about 15 minutes, and bam—easy peasy fancy fig and prosciutto crostini!

These crostini are absolutely perfect for holiday entertaining, but they are equally great for snacking at home. And if you are looking for more fig appetizers with prosciutto, you will love these Prosciutto Wrapped Figs.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Fresh Figs – to find ripe figs, choose plump fruits that are slightly firm when pressed and not at all mushy. Since you are eating them raw, you want to be sure they are nice and ripe, but you don’t want them to be overripe either! Instead of fresh figs, you can also make these with caramelized figs too. It’s such a great variation too.
  • Crostini Bread – my favorite bread to use for crostini is a simple French baguette. It’s firm enough to hold plenty of toppings, even when sliced fairly thin. They are also the perfect appetizer size.
  • Gorgonzola Cheese – Gorgonzola cheese is an Italian blue cheese that has a mild, earthly, and salty flavor that tastes amazing with sweet honey and figs.
  • Prosciutto – thinly sliced, salty prosciutto is a perfect match for both gorgonzola cheese and figs. You only need a little for each crostini—about half a slice if you are using baguette bread.
  • Honey – because it is a garnish and not an ingredient that you are cooking with, I recommend using a high quality local honey if you can!

Substitutions and Serving Tips

  • Try substituting just about any type of blue cheese for the Gorgonzola. Or, if you aren’t into blue cheese, feta cheese, goat cheese, or Brie cheese would all taste great.
  • If you prefer to cook the figs first, you could caramelize the figs in a little honey first, or even substitute fig preserves or fig jam.
  • If you like your toasted bread to be a little softer rather than crispy, just cut the baguettes into slightly thicker slices.
  • To make this vegetarian, just skip the prosciutto!

How to Make Fig Prosciutto Crostini

  1. Toast the pistachios. Chop pistachios roughly and then add to a saute pan over medium heat. Cook until fragrant and lightly golden brown, stirring frequently so that they don’t burn. Set aside to cool.
  2. Toast the crostini slices. Bake at 400 degrees F for 6-7 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for a few minutes.
  3. Assemble the crostini. Place the toasted crostini on a platter, then add a half slice of prosciutto, 3-4 slices of fig, and 1/2 tablespoon of Gorgonzola cheese. Drizzle with honey and top with toasted pistachios.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you store fresh figs?

If your figs are already super ripe, store in the fridge for up to 3 more days, depending on just how ripe they were. Or, if your figs aren’t quite ripe yet, you can store them at room temperature for a couple days and then transfer to the fridge.

What other fruits taste good with Gorgonzola cheese?

Even though it is a blue cheese, Gorgonzola is a little more mild than others. It’s salty and earthy, meaning it tastes great with sweet fruits such as apricots, dates, pears, apples, and grapes.

Can you make this ahead of time?

The only part of these crostini that you can make in advance are the toasted pistachios, which can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for about 5 days. Otherwise, assemble your crostini just before serving so that they taste fresh.
