The Best M & M cookie recipe
This M & M cookie recipe is our favorite cookie recipe to make when we need to make cookies for a bake sale or potluck dinner. They're soft and chewy and the best chocolate M&M cookies. So if you're wondering how to make M&M cookies, this one is for you!

Make-Ahead Cookie Dough
- Fridge- You can make the cookie dough ahead of time. It will last in the fridge for a couple of weeks in an airtight container.
- Freezer- Like most cookie doughs, this dough can be frozen and baked at a later date. Simply scoop into balls and place on a parchment-lined pan and freeze until solid. Once frozen, remove from the cookie sheet and place in a freezer bag. They can be stored in the freezer for 3-4 months. You can also store the cookie dough in small Tupperware containers. When you know you're ready to bake the cookies, take the dough out of the freezer and thaw in the fridge for 24 hours before you need it.
- To Bake Frozen Cookie Dough Balls: Defrost for an hour or two in the fridge and bake as directed. If the dough is very cold, you may need to add a minute or two of cook time.
Storing Baked Cookies
You can also store the cookies already baked.
- Airtight Container- If you want to store the cookies already baked, just place them in a container with a lid. They will stay fresh for a few days.
- Freezer- If you haven’t tried this method, you’re missing out. Cookies freeze really well and are so fun to grab out of the freezer and enjoy. Let them thaw for a few minutes and you’ll have an extra chewy cookie to enjoy. Cookies can remain in the freezer, in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Optional Add-Ins
- Nuts: just about any kind! Toast them in a saute pan about 5 minutes first or lightly toast them in the oven before adding to the dough.
- M&M’s: plain, peanut, coconut, peanut butter, all sizes, shapes, and flavors! A really fun and cute addition.
- Dried Fruit: cranberries, raisins, blueberries, strawberries, flaked coconut (super yummy when it’s toasted) and even sliced & dried bananas!
- Extra Crunch: try crushing some whoppers, crushed potato chips, or pretzels,
- Flavored Morsels: butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, caramel bits, or Heath pieces.

Ingredients in the Best M and M Cookie Recipe-
Butter: The real stuff, Margarine, and Butter flavored Crisco just won't do. I almost exclusively buy salted butter. It just seems too difficult to manage to buy salted butter for toast and unsalted for baking so you'll find most of my recipes are made or can be made with salted butter. Also, be sure to use room temperature butter when baking. Don't microwave the butter or it'll change the consistency of the cookie dough and your cookies will be flatter after baking. Buttery chocolate chip cookies is where it's at!
Sugar: Just the regular 'ol granulated white sugar works great. You can use coconut sugar or some other substitution in a healthier version of a chocolate chip cookie for this recipe, just the regular white granulated sugar will do.
Brown sugar: You can use dark brown sugar if that's all you have on hand, It makes the color a little deeper and the taste a little richer but light brown sugar is what you're looking for here too.
Eggs: Large eggs work great. When baking, it's almost always better to use eggs are room temperature. Why should eggs be room temperature warm when baking? Cold eggs could re-harden the fat, making the batter appear curdled or lumpy and it could possibly affect the texture of the baked product.
Vanilla Flavoring: Using the real deal vanilla extract will give your cookies a lot of depth in flavor.
Flour: You can use regular all-purpose flour for this recipe.
Sea Salt: I like using the Himalayan sea salt in my recipes. It has more minerals in it than iodized salt. It's also delicious to give the ball of cookie dough just a little sprinkle of salt before baking. Delicious!
Baking Soda & Baking Powder: Regular baking soda and regular baking powder work great for this recipe too.
M and M's: You know the drill. Make 'em cute. Use your favorite M & M candy to make a fun and festive treat any time of the year!
