Skeleton Pizza Pockets Ingredients
- Yeast - this recipe calls for active dry yeast which needs to be activated by mixing first with lukewarm water and a touch of sugar. If you use instant yeast you can skip the proofing step.
- Water - your water should be lukewarm, or around 95-110 degrees F.
- Sugar - you can use regular granulated sugar, or even a bit of honey.
- Salt - sea salt works great.
- Flour - I recommend using all-purpose flour for this pizza dough recipe.
- Oil - olive oil works great, or any other type of cooking oil.
- Fillings - for this recipe, we suggested pizza sauce or marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni. However, you can fill these Pizza Skulls with any of your favorite pizza toppings.

How To Make Halloween Pizza Skulls
- Proof the yeast. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast and mix well. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
- Mix the pizza dough. Once your yeast has โproofed,โ add the olive oil, salt and about 1 ยฝ cups of flour. Mix with a paddle or dough hook until all the ingredients are completely combined. Add in the rest of the flour, about a ยผ cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the edges of the bowl.
- Roll out the dough. Mix on low speed for another 1-2 minutes until the dough is nice and smooth, then transfer to a lightly floured surface and roll into a rectangle that will cover the skull shaped mold.
- Stretch dough over the mold. Spray the inside of mini skull baking tins with nonstick cooking spray. With lightly floured hands, stretch and shape your dough over the skeleton mold. Use your fist to gently shape the dough into the mold without poking a hole in the dough.
- Add toppings. Inside each skull shaped cavity, add a couple tablespoons of pizza sauce, about ยผ cup of cheese, and a couple tablespoons of chopped pepperoni. Use kitchen shears or clean scissors to cut around the dough, leaving enough space so that you can pinch the dough together to close each of the pizza pockets. Continue until they are all filled.
- Bake. Bake in a preheated oven for 20- 30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the skull face is golden brown.
- Serve. Remove from the oven and serve warm. Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Make sure to seal the dough well by pinching across the entire seam. You also want to avoid overfilling your pizza pockets. Itโs tempting to add as much filling as you can, but they will be much more likely to explode. You can also brush with a little egg wash if you really want to make sure they are sealed in tightly.
Even if you are using a nonstick baking pan, you still need to spray with a little nonstick cooking spray. Another reason they may stick is if there was a hole in the dough or if the filling exploded a bit. Make sure the dough is free of holes and that you seal the seam well.
Yes! You can make the dough a day in advance and store covered in the fridge. Or, you could make, fill, and seal your pizza pockets and store in the fridge overnight. The next day, let the pan come to room temperature while you preheat the oven and bake as directed.
There are a few skull shaped pans out there that are easy to find online. Wilton makes a skull cakelet pan as does Nordic Ware. Really anything that you find that you like will work well. Just before to grease before adding the dough!
Storing and Reheating
- Refrigerator: store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: you can freeze pizza pockets in an airtight container or freezer bags for up to 2 months. To thaw, transfer to the fridge overnight.
