What is the Best Chocolate For Chocolate Fondue

A wide variety of chocolate will work great for this fondue recipe. At the bare minimum use high-quality chocolate chips. Guittard chocolate chips are my favorite. If you can spend a little more on the chocolate move up the quality scale a little to the chocolate bar found in the candy aisle at the grocery store. You can also buy coverture chocolate from Amazon or a local bakery supply store.

(Amazon links included are links to chocolate that you may find useful.  I may receive a small commission if you purchase through these links. )

    • Callebaut Chocolate
      • Dark Chocolate
      • Milk Chocolate
      • White Chocolate
    • Peter's Chocolate
    • Chocolate Bars- found in the candy aisle in the supermarket (Trader Joe's, Lindt, Ghirardelli)
    • Chocolate Chips

    Ways to serve fondue

    • Fondue Pot- Here's the one I'm using.
    • Here's a highly rated one from Amazon with an actual burner below the pot.
    • Slow cooker
    • Insulated bowl

    Ingredients

    • High-Quality Chocolate- Use the highest quality chocolate you can find.  The bar chocolate on the candy aisle works great or sometimes there are bulk blocks of chocolate in the bulk section at the supermarket.  Do not use candy wafers or almond bark. You can make this recipe using dark chocolate or milk chocolate, or a mixture of both.
    • Cream- Heavy whipping cream works great.
    • Vanilla Extract- Adds a nice roundness to the flavor. You can substitute another extract if desired but nothing beats the flavor of a great vanilla extract.
    • Salt- Sea salt works great here, just a pinch is needed.

    Variations

    • Dark Chocolate Fondue-  Use semi-sweet chocolate in place of the milk chocolate. Or you can even use a combination of both.
    • White Chocolate Fondue-  Substitute white chocolate for the milk chocolate. The lint or Ghirardelli white chocolate bars found in the candy aisle at the grocery store work perfect for this recipe.
    • Peanut Butter Chocolate Fondue-  Add ½ cup creamy peanut butter to the chocolate fondue. Be sure to use creamy peanut butter and not natural. You can start an even more peanut butter once the chocolate has melted for an, even more, peanut buttery taste if desired.
    • Mexican Chocolate Fondue-  Add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ancho chili pepper.
    • Toffee Chocolate Fondue-  Add ½ cup toffee bits Heath bits to the chocolate fondue.  This is especially good in white chocolate fondue
    • Peppermint Chocolate Fondue-  throw in one cup chopped up Andes Mints into the chocolate fondue or add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract to the chocolate fondue once it has melted.  Add more to taste if desired.
    • White Chocolate Raspberry- Use white chocolate instead of dark chocolate, and swirl in raspberry jam.
    • Boozy Fondue- Try adding a splash of Chambord, Bailey's, or Grand Marnier.
    • S’mores- Use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate, then swirl in ⅓ cup marshmallow cream and top with crumbled graham crackers.

    • Salty- Potato Chips, Pretzels, Pretzel Rods/Sticks,
    • Cakes/Pastries- Cream Puffs, Angel Food Cake, Macaroons, Sponge Cake, Cinnamon Rolls (Cubed), Pound Cake
    • Fruit- Strawberries, Bananas, Cantelope, Apples, Bananas, Dried Apricots, Fresh Coconut Chunks,
    • Candy- Cinnamon Bears, Caramels, Peanut Brittle, Gummy Bears

How To Make Chocolate Fondue Recipe

This chocolate fondue is as easy as melting chocolate and cream together.  It’s best to serve your fondue as soon as possible after assembling so that it doesn’t thicken up too much. You can use a fondue pot if you have one, a slow cooker, or a double boiler to heat your chocolate fondue.

    Fondue Pot

    1. Add chopped-up chocolates, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to your fondue pot and gently stir.
    2. Cook on low well stirring every 10 minutes or so. The fondue is ready to serve when the chocolate is melted and smooth after strength.
    3. Turn fondue pot on low and serve with your favorite assorted dippers

    Slow Cooker

    1.  Lightly-greased slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
    2. Add chopped-up chocolates, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to your Crock-Pot and gently stir.
    3. Cover and cook on low for 1 hour, stirring every 10 minutes or so. The fondue is ready when the chocolate is melted and smooth after stirring
    4. Turn slow cooker to warm and serve with your favorite dippers

    Double Boiler

    1.  In a medium-sized saucepan, on medium, heat at about one inch of water and bring to a low simmer.
    2.  Chop up the chocolate into half-inch chunks and place into a heatproof bowl.
    3. Add cream vanilla and a pinch of salt to the Bowl.
    4. Place the bowl on top of the pan and stir gently until all chocolate is melted.
    5. Pour the melted chocolate into a serving bowl and serve with your favorite assorted dippers.

    What To Do With Leftovers

    • Cake Filling- Fondue is Basically chocolate ganache. Beach put it between two layers of cake for an amazingly decadent cake filling.
    • Topping for cheesecake- this chocolate fondue is perfect to add on top of your favorite Cheesecake.
    • Homemade Hot Chocolate-  add some chocolate fondue to warm milk and Heat evenly over medium heat.
    • Frosting- cooled chocolate fondue is basically a ganache so if it's thick enough, slather a bunch over a cupcake,  brownies, or your favorite cake.
    • S'mores- leather cinch chocolate fondue on graham crackers and then talk with a toasted marshmallow bam, and easy homemade Smore

Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Fondue

    • Quality Chocolate:  Be sure to use high-quality chocolate. Guittard, Ghirardelli, Peter's, or Callebaut work great.
    • Stir Often-   Chocolate can be sensitive to high heat so be sure that your chocolate doesn't get too hot. Gently stir the chocolate and cream mixture until it comes up to heat and then often as it's in the heated fondue pot.
    • Turn to Warm/Off:  As soon as your chocolate is smooth and melted, it has no more chance, turn your Crock-Pot or fondue pot off completely. As long as your chocolate is nice and smooth, you don't need to have it on heat. Just turn the heat on periodically to keep your chocolate fondue smooth.
    • Doubling The Recipe:  you can double this chocolate fondue recipe really easily. You can make it in a slow cooker a double boiler or fondue pot. You want me to keep a closer eye on the heat and stir more often.
    • If it's too thin, add in more chocolate.  If it's too thick, add more WARM cream.

How do I reheat chocolate fondue?

You can reheat your chocolate fondue in a slow cooker on low stirring frequently. You can also reheat it in the microwave at 50% power, stirring frequently until warmed through. You can also reheat it in a double boiler to ensure your chocolate does not scorch.

Can I make chocolate fondue ahead of time?

Yep! You can make chocolate fondue ahead of time in the slow cooker and keep it on warm until you're ready to serve or you can make it a few days in advance and refrigerate until needed.

How to make your chocolate thinner?

Add a little more cream to your chocolate as it is heating up and it will thin a little.

How to Make Your Chocolate Fondue Thicker

Chocolate fondue will thicken as it cools. It will never completely hardened because of the cream in the mixture. It turns into a ganache. If you'd like to have thicker fondue, remove it from the Heat and wait 5 to 7 minutes and your chocolate will become a little thicker.
