    DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

After years of speculation and copycat recipes, DoubleTree has finally released their secret cookie recipe and we couldn’t be more pleased.  Sure, there are plenty of excellent chocolate chip cookie recipes out there, but there is just something so homey and delicious and perfect about DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies.

So, what makes these cookies so special?  First of all, they manage to be a little crisp around the edges while staying nice and chewy in the middle. A touch of cinnamon tastes and smells amazing, and the addition of rolled oats adds to the chewy texture.  Plus, they are jam packed full of chocolate chips and walnuts and who doesn’t love that?

    DoubleTree Cookie History

These iconic cookies were first created in 1986, where they were mostly used for VIP guest treats.  Now, each guest is welcomed to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels with one of these warm chocolate chip cookies.  According to their website, that’s approximately 65,000 per day!

Ingredients in this DoubleTree Cookie Recipe

    • Butter - you want your butter to be at room temperature so that it will cream properly with the sugars.
    • Sugar - regular granulated sugar.
    • Light Brown Sugar - this adds a nice caramel flavor.
    • Lemon Juice - it’s best to use fresh squeezed lemon juice here.  It helps to activate the baking soda, which gives these cookies a little lift and chew.
    • Vanilla Extract - pure vanilla extract tastes best.
    • Salt - we like to use sea salt.
    • Cinnamon - use any kind of ground cinnamon.
    • Eggs - any kind of large eggs will work.
    • Flour - we use all-purpose flour.
    • Old-Fashioned Oats - you want to use old-fashioned rolled oats.
    • Baking Soda - this helps to give the cookies a bit of lift.
    • Chocolate Chips - the Doubletree recipe uses semi-sweet chocolate chips.
    • Walnuts - you can buy these pre-chopped, or else just chop them yourself.

How to Make DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies

    1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
    2. In a large bowl with a spatula, or stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter, sugar, and brown sugar for about 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy, scraping the sides down as necessary.
    3. Slowly add eggs, vanilla, lemon juice, salt and cinnamon and mix to combine, scraping down the sides again as needed.
    4. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats and baking soda and whisk well, then add the flour mixture into the butter mixture and combine with the mixer on low speed, just until mixed.  You may want to scrape the bottom and sides of the mixing bowl to be sure all of the ingredients are incorporated, but do not overmix.
    5. Add chocolate chips and walnuts and mix gently, just until all ingredients are combined.
    6. Scoop and roll 1 ¼" balls and place about 2” apart onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or greased lightly with pan spray.
    7. Bake in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown, but the center is still soft.
    8. Remove from oven and let the cookies cool on the pan for about 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.  Enjoy!

Why Put Lemon Juice in Chocolate Chip Cookies?

Whenever you have baking soda in a recipe, you need to also have something acidic for it to react with.  Oftentimes, this is baking powder.  Other recipes rely on brown sugar alone, which is slightly acidic.

This recipe uses just a touch of fresh-squeezed lemon juice to react with the baking soda, giving it a little lift and an extra chewy texture.  There’s so little you won’t even taste it.

How to Store DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookies

You can store your cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week - no need to refrigerate.

    Can I Freeze These Cookies?

We recommend freezing the cookie dough rather than the baked cookies.  A great way to do this is to portion your dough into balls, then transfer to freezer bags to store.  This way, you can pull your cookies from the freezer onto a prepared baking sheet (covered with parchment paper) and bake in a preheated oven.

You don’t even need to thaw them - add an extra 2-3 minutes to the baking time.

While the flavor was good, the cookies did spread quite a bit.

I'm sorry your cookies spread. I'd love to figure out what happened. A couple of questions, did you use 100% butter? Did you happen to soften the butter in the microwave?
