Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rolo Recipe

During the holiday season, I love to have a few quick and easy treat options to give as teacher gifts or bring to parties—something that doesn’t require a candy thermometer or lots of steps.

These chocolate covered Rolo pretzels check all of the boxes. Beyond being delicious sweet and salty treats, they are also easy to make ahead of time and have a total homemade, handcrafted look to them without much effort. They’re even easy enough to have the little ones help decorate.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Pretzels – I like to use the square pretzels because they have more surface area with smaller holes which prevents the chocolate from oozing out. You can try this with mini twist pretzels, too.
  • Rolo Candies – the chocolate and caramel flavor of Rolos is so delicious when you combine it with creamy white chocolate and crunchy pretzels. With that being said, just about any chocolate candy of a similar size will work. It just needs to be slightly smaller than the pretzel.
  • White Chocolate Melting Wafers – white chocolate wafers are specially formulated for easy melting and dipping at home, so they are a great choice. You can substitute white chocolate chips if you prefer. Just keep a close eye on them in the microwave because they will burn more easily. Feel free to also substitute dark chocolate or milk chocolate!
  • Sprinkles – here is where you can really customize these pretzel and Rolo treats to fit just about any holiday or special occasion. Use any kind and color of sprinkles that you want! Just be sure to add them before the white chocolate sets up or they won’t stick.

How to Make This Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rolo Recipe

  1. Top pretzels with Rolo candy.  Place 24 pretzels onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then place a Rolo Candy in the center of each.
  2. Bake.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 3-4 minutes, or just until the Rolo candies have started to soften and look shiny.
  3. Top with a second pretzel and cool.  Remove from the oven and place a second pretzel on top of the Rolo candy. Very gently press so that the Rolo is pressed to the edges of the pretzels and that they are in line with each other as much as possible. Set aside to cool and set up completely.
  4. Dip into white chocolate. Melt the white chocolate, then dip each pretzel Rolo pretzel about halfway into the chocolate. Shake off any excess and then place back onto the parchment. Top with sprinkles, then repeat with the rest. Let them set up completely before enjoying or storing.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • If you want to turn these into Rolo Pretzel Turtles candies, just skip the second pretzel and top with a pecan half instead. Or, top with colorful M&Ms to make easy Rolo pretzel bites. Easy peasy!
  • Be sure to add any sprinkles before the white chocolate sets up. You can usually dip up to about 4-5 pretzels before they get too set up to stick.
  • Once you remove the pretzels from the oven, work quickly but gently so that the Rolos don’t ooze out from the sides or the bottoms.
  • If you want to try using a different chocolate candy, be sure to substitute one that is a similar size. Hershey’s Kisses work great, as do miniature Reese’s cups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to store these?

The best way to store Rolo pretzels is in an airtight container in the fridge. They will stay much fresher in the fridge than at room temperature—for up to 5 days! If you want to make these even further in advance, you can also store them in freezer bags in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Can you freeze Rolo pretzels?

Yes! Place them flat on a baking sheet and put into the freezer until they are hard—at least 30 minutes. From there, you can carefully transfer to a freezer bag or another airtight container where you can store them in the freezer for up to 2 months.

What candies can you use besides Rolos?

If you want to try another candy, the best alternatives are similarly sized chocolate candies, such as Hershey’s Kisses or miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. They need to be a little smaller than the size of the pretzels and have enough chocolate to where the ratio of chocolate to pretzel is just about even.

Storing Instructions

  • Refrigerator: store in an airtight container in the cooler for up to 5 days. They will stay crunchy longer than if left out at room temperature.
  • Freezing: store in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months in the freezer.
