White Pizza Sauce Recipe
Even if you are a diehard red sauce fan, this white pizza sauce will have you licking the spoon. Made with heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, and garlic, this white sauce is velvety smooth, rich, delicious, and so stinking simple.
Because none of the flavors are overpowering, you can have fun creating all sorts of flavor combos with different cheeses and toppings. Feel free to make it a little spicy, play around with fresh and dried herbs, and add toppings like chicken, bacon bits, fresh arugula, mushroomsโthe list can go on and on.
Below you will find a few more ideas for toppings, but you can also use this sauce as a dip for breadsticks and veggies or as a spread for crostini. Get creative!
Ingredients You Will Need
- Heavy Whipping Cream - this is what really gives that velvety, creamy flavor. If you want to cut a little fat from the recipe, though, you can substitute milk, but you will need to add 1-2 teaspoons of flour in order for it to thicken properly.
- Parmesan Cheese - this adds a nutty, salty flavor. Youโll want to either grate your own, or purchase freshly grated, but avoid the Parmesan in a can. It doesnโt have the same flavor and wonโt melt well.
- Garlic Powder - this adds a more mild garlic flavor and is perfect for using in creamy sauces like this because there arenโt any bits or pieces like there would be for minced garlic.
- Nutmeg - also found in American-style Alfredo sauce, nutmeg gives a great flavor to all sorts of rich, creamy dishes.
- Pepper - cracked black pepper will give a lot of flavor and a little extra spice to this sauce.
How to Make This Pizza White Sauce Recipe
- Heat the ingredients. In a medium sized saucepan, add the heavy whipping cream, Parmesan cheese, nutmeg, garlic powder, and pepper. Heat on medium high heat while stirring with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula.
- Boil. Bring to a rapid boil and boil for 1 minute, or until the Parmesan cheese is fully melted. Stir constantly.
- Use or store. Remove from heat, then use immediately on homemade pizza or allow to cool and then store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
The flavors and ingredients for both this white sauce recipe and our Alfredo sauce recipe are almost identical, but not exactly the same. Alfredo sauce is thinner and made with chicken broth since it is used for pasta. This white sauce recipe for pizza is meant to be thicker and more of a spreadable consistency.
Nope. This isnโt a good sauce to try and freeze. Once frozen and then thawed, the sauce has a tendency to separate. Since itโs so quick to make, I recommend either using it right away or storing it in the fridge.ย
Just think of what tastes good in fettuccine alfredo and youโll have your answer! Some of my favorite toppings for pizza with white sauce are spinach, chicken, tomatoes, mushrooms, arugula, roasted red peppers, pepperoni, and bacon bits. For cheeses, stick with white cheeses like mozzarella, Gruyere, and Parmesan.
Storing Instructions
- Refrigerator: store leftover white sauce in an airtight container or major jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- To use: you can spread this onto pizza straight from the fridge. If you need to thin it down a bit, you can try microwaving for about 15 seconds at a time.
