Adding pineapple on pizza can be a controversial topic, but we dare any skeptics to try this homemade Hawaiian Pizza recipe and not be converted. It’s got a deliciously chewy crust, spread with sweet and savory flavors like tomato sauce, cheese, Canadian bacon, and juicy pineapple.

For the bacon lovers out there, feel free to substitute a smokey bacon instead.  Other simple Hawaii pizza topping substitutions to make would be any type of ham and pineapple from the can.  You can use our homemade pizza crust recipe, or purchase premade dough to keep life easy peasy.

  • Pizza Dough – you can use this recipe to make a simple homemade pizza dough, or use premade dough.
  • Marinara Sauce – you can use your favorite marinara sauce, tomato sauce, or red pizza sauce.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – you can use pre-shredded or shred your own.
  • Canadian Bacon – while Canadian bacon is the traditional topping on Hawaiian Pizza, you could also substitute ham or even bacon bits.
  • Pineapple – to clean a pineapple, cut off the bottom and top, then use a very sharp knife to slice around the sides removing the outer layer and any extra “eyes.”  From there, cut into bite-sized pieces.  You could also use canned pineapple chunks if you’d like!

How to Make Hawaiian Pizza from Scratch

  1. Make the dough.  Make your Homemade Pizza Dough.  If you are making the dough ahead of time, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator overnight.  Otherwise, cover the bowl with a towel or plastic and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
  2. Stretch the dough.  With lightly floured hands, stretch and shape your dough into desired pizza pan.  If it begins to resist, let the dough relax for a couple of minutes and then continue.
  3. Add the sauce and toppings.  Add the marinara sauce and spread evenly onto the pizza crust with the back of a spoon.  Top with the shredded cheese, Canadian bacon and pineapple chunks then sprinkle with dried oregano and sea salt.
  4. Bake.  Bake in a preheated 450 degree oven for 20-22 minutes, or until the bottom of the pizza is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  5. Serve.  Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.  Enjoy!

Ingredients

Homemade Pizza Crust

  • 1 cup (235 g) water, warm (95-110 degrees F)
  • 1 tablespoon (1 tablespoon) sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon (1 teaspoon) salt
  • cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon (1 tablespoon) olive oil

Toppings

  • 2/3 cup (165 g) marinara sauce
  • 2 cups (225 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 6 ounces (170 g) Canadian bacon, sliced thinly
  • 1/2 cup (85 g) pineapple, cut into small chunks
  • 1/2 teaspoon (1/2 teaspoon) dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon (1/2 teaspoon) salt

Instructions
 

How to Make Pizza Dough

  • In a medium-sized mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast and mix well.  Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
  • Once your yeast has “proofed,” add the olive oil, salt and about 1½ cups of flour.  Using a dough hook, mix until all the ingredients are completely combined.
  • Add in the rest of the flour, about a 1/4 cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the edges of the bowl.
  • Mix on low speed for another 1-2 minutes until the dough is nice and smooth, then transfer to a lightly floured surface and shape the dough into a ball.
  • If you are making the dough ahead, wrap it tightly and store in the fridge overnight. Otherwise, cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm place for about 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.

How To Assemble and Bake Your Hawaiian Pizza

  • Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
  • With lightly floured hands, stretch and shape your dough into a 12" pizza pan. If it begins to resist, let the dough relax for a couple of minutes and then continue.

Notes

If you bake the pizza in a smaller-sized pan, reduce the oven temperature to 400 degrees so that the thicker crust has a chance to bake all the way through before the outside gets too dark.
