Rice Krispies Easter Nests
I grew up making these fun little Rice Krispie Easter Nests every year with my Mom and siblings. We used to top them with jelly beans, and while that is still good, my taste buds have grown up a bit. I now love to top each rice krispie nest with Cadbury Mini Eggs.
Start by whipping up a batch of classic Rice Krispie treats, then shape them into nest-like structures using your hands or a muffin tin. Once the nests are formed and cooled, it's time to get creative with the decorations!
Whatever kind of Easter egg candy you choose, your family is going to love making and eating these fun little easter treats. The options are endless when it comes to decorating your Easter nests, so let your imagination run wild! How to Make Rice Krispies Bird Nest
Rice Krispie Nest Ingredients
- Salted Butter - salted butter will give these such a great flavor, but if you prefer you can use unsalted. Do not try and use margarine, though.
- Marshmallows - mini marshmallows melt much more easily so those are the ones we recommend. Also be sure and use fresh marshmallows because they will give the finished treats a much better texture.
- Rice Krispies Treats Cereal - any brand of crispy, puffed rice cereal will work. You can also try other types of cereal to make these with, such as Fruity Pebbles, Froot Loops and Golden Grahams.
- Coconut - any kind of shredded coconut works great.
- Green Food Coloring - you only need a few drops. You can use liquid or gel coloring and may need more or less depending on the strength.
- Easter Candies - you can use Cadbury mini eggs, jelly beans, or any other egg shaped candies.
How to Make Rice Krispie Easter Nests
- Make the rice krispie treats mixture. In a large pan nonstick pan over medium low heat, add the butter and melt completely. Add the mini marshmallows and mix till melted. Off the heat, add the rice krispies and gently stir until combined.
- Press into cupcake tins. Spray cupcake pans with nonstick spray, then lightly wet your hands. Scoop a ball of rice krispies to form a small nest in each cupcake tin. You will want it to come up above the lip of the pan slightly.
- Color the coconut. Place the coconut into a freezer bag. Add 3 drops of green food coloring, seal, and shake until all the coconut is green and looks like "grass."
- Decorate. Add about 1 tablespoon of coconut grass to the top of each bird nest and place your favorite kind of egg-shaped candy on top. Let the treats cool until you are able to easily unmold them. Enjoy!
Storing Rice Krispie Treats
- Room Temperature: store your rice krispie nests in even layers separated by wax paper in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
