Frequently Asked Questions
You arenโt just seeing things.ย Over the past few years, the majority of cake mix boxes have shrunk.ย What used to always be 18.25 oz is now usually 15.25 oz.ย ย
We have accounted for this in this Cake Mix Cookie recipe by adding a little extra flour.ย But, if you happen to purchase a larger (18.25 oz) box of cake mix, just use the entire box and omit the all-purpose flour.ย ย
There are so many options for you to get creative with here.ย For these particular Cake Mix Cookies, we kept it simple and went with a chocolate mix, to go with the chocolate chips.ย But you honestly canโt go wrong.
Tips for the Best Cake Mix Cookies
- Use a cookie scoop (or measuring spoon if you donโt have a scoop) to make all of your cookies the same size. You can feel free to make your cookies smaller or larger than what this recipe calls for, just keep in mind that smaller cookies will bake faster and larger ones will take longer.
- If you donโt want to bake all of your Cake Mix Cookies at once, you can store the dough in the fridge for up to 2 days. We recommend waiting to add sprinkles until just before you bake, though, so that the colors donโt bleed into the dough.
- Once baked, you can store your cookies at room temp in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Baked Cake Mix Cookies can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Youโll want to keep the cookies in an airtight container or freezer bag, then thaw at room temperature once you are ready to eat them.
- Unbaked cookies can be frozen, too. Itโs easiest if you pre-scoop your dough, then transfer your dough balls to an airtight container and freeze for up to 2 months. Once ready to bake, transfer your cookies to a prepared baking sheet and bake as directed, adding on a couple extra minutes.
Storing and Make Ahead Instructions
- Room Temperature- If you want to store the cookies already baked, just place them in a container with a lid. They will stay fresh for a few days.
- Freezer- If you havenโt tried this method, youโre missing out. Cookies freeze really well and are so fun to grab out of the freezer and enjoy. Let them thaw for a few minutes and youโll have an extra chewy cookie to enjoy. Cookies can remain in the freezer, in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.
- Make ahead: you can store the cookie dough in the fridge for up to 1 week. To make them even further ahead of time, you can scoop the cookie dough and store in freezer bags for up to 3 months. To bake from frozen, just add an extra minute or two to the baking time.
