Ingredients You Will Need
- Sausage – I like to use Jimmy Dean pork sausage for this gravy recipe. It is well-seasoned and have just the right amount of fat.
- Water – you may need to add 1-2 tablespoons to the sausage while cooking.
- Butter – we suggest using salted butter or even bacon grease. This adds even more yummy flavor to your gravy.
- Onion Powder and Garlic Powder – this adds a nice sweet onion and garlic flavor to the finished gravy.
- Flour – we use all-purpose flour to thicken the gravy.
- Milk – use whole or 2% milk for this recipe.
- Salt and Pepper

How to Make Homemade Sausage Gravy
- Cook the sausage. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground sausage and cook, using a spatula to break up the sausage. You may need to add a tablespoon or two of water to help break up the sausage as it cooks. Continue to heat until no longer pink or about 6-7 minutes. Do not drain the fat.
- Thicken the gravy. Add butter, onion powder, garlic powder, and flour to the cooked sausage and stir together. While stirring constantly, gradually add milk and cook until the gravy comes to a boil. Once it reaches a low boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook for 2 minutes until thickened, while still stirring constantly.
- Enjoy! Once it has cooked and thickened, remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot over a split biscuit. Enjoy!
