Rainbow Fruit Kebabs
If you’re looking for a healthy, kid-friendly snack or dessert, these Rainbow Fruit Kebabs are a perfect choice. All you need are wooden skewers, colorful fruit, and a little bit of time. It’s best to choose fruit that can be cut into similarly sized 1-2” pieces so that they stay on the skewers.
We’ve given you quite a few ideas for colorful fruit below, but feel free to use others that you like. Your fresh fruit kabobs don’t have to be made in a rainbow pattern, either. You can create all sorts of different themes depending on the occasion - 4th of July, Christmas, gender reveal, Valentine’s Day, or even Halloween.
If you want to turn this into more of a sweet dessert, you could also add marshmallows to the skewers and serve with chocolate fondue or this Lemon Cheesecake Fruit Dip.
Rainbow Skewers Fruit Ideas
- Wooden Skewers - any kind of 6-12” wooden skewers will work great. There’s no need to soak them ahead of time.
- Red: Red Apples, Red Grapes, Strawberries, Raspberries, Watermelon
- Orange Fruit: Oranges, Cantaloupe, Mango
- Yellow: Pineapple, Peach
- Green: Grapes, Green Apples, Kiwi, Honeydew Melon
- Blue: Blueberries
- Purple: Purple Grapes, Plums
How to Make Rainbow Fruit Kebabs
- Prepare the fruit. Prepare the fruit by washing, cutting, and peeling, if necessary, into bite sized pieces.
- Assemble the fruit skewers. Add the fruit onto a wooden skewer in the following order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
- Store or serve. You can make these ahead of time and store in a covered container in the fridge for up to 24 hours before you need them. Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
For the most part, you can prep fruit skewers up to 12 hours ahead of time. However, this depends on what types of fruit you are adding to your kabobs. Certain fruits such as apples and bananas will brown quickly, so you wouldn’t want to make any Fruit Kabobs ahead of time with these types of fruits on them. If you do plan to put fruit on skewers ahead of time, lay them on a tray and cover with plastic wrap so that most surfaces are touching the plastic. Store in the fridge overnight.
Nope! The main reason to soak skewers is so that they won’t burn on a grill and since you won’t be grilling these fruits in skewers, there’s no need to soak them.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that each of your fruits is relatively the same bite size. You also only want to use fruits that are sturdy enough to hold well onto each skewer, and not one that is so delicate that it will fall off. Some of my favorite fruits to use for Fruit Skewers are strawberries, oranges, kiwi, pineapple, blueberries, and grapes.
Storing Instructions
- Refrigerator: store Fruit Skewers in a single layer on a platter covered with plastic wrap. They will stay fresh for up to 3 days depending on the types of fruits that you use.
