Homemade Guacamole

This Simple Guacamole Recipe is quick, easy, and just as good as anything you’ll find at a restaurant.  With a few simple ingredients (and no cooking), you can have the zestiest, fresh, and flavorful party dip in no time—just add chips!

My family’s favorite way to eat this is with a giant bowl of tortilla chips.  But, I have been known to serve it as a dip for Homemade Taco Pizza, stuffed inside Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas, alongside Shredded Beef Tacos, or even mixed into deviled egg filling!

Simple Guacamole Recipe

Homemade guacamole really is the best.  It’s healthy, satisfying, naturally gluten-free and so fresh.  You can make it exactly how your family likes—smooth or chunky, spicy or mild, and seasoned to taste.  Plus it’s much cheaper than buying from the store or a restaurant.

This easy homemade guacamole recipe sticks to the basics and is made with just a few ingredients, like red onion, cilantro, cayenne, tomatoes, and lime juice.  It is balanced perfectly so that it will taste great with all sorts of chips, tacos, sandwiches and more.

Key Guacamole Ingredients

  • Avocados – you want them nice and ripe, but still slightly firm.
  • Garlic – fresh garlic is best.
  • Salt – start with the amount in the recipe, but you may want to increase the amount of salt to taste at the end.
  • Red Onion – you can also substitute a white or yellow onion if you prefer.
  • Cilantro – this is a classic ingredient in guacamole, but if you in the no-cilantro camp you can feel free to eliminate it.
  • Cayenne Powder – you can add more or less depending on your preference.
  • Tomatoes – we like Roma tomatoes because they stay nice and firm.
  • Lime – you’ll want to use fresh lime juice.  If you love lime you could even add some lime zest!

How to Make Homemade Guacamole

  1. Mince the salt and garlic. Place the minced garlic and 1 teaspoon of salt directly onto a cutting board. Using a large knife, run the blade of the knife over the garlic to mash the garlic and the salt together, creating a paste-like mixture.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients. Transfer the garlic and salt mixture to a medium mixing bowl and add the diced red onion, chopped cilantro, cayenne, tomatoes, and avocado.
  3. Mash the avocado. Squeeze lime juice on the avocados, then using a fork or a potato masher, mash the avocados to desired consistency.
  4. Serve. Taste and season with extra salt, lime juice, and cilantro if needed.  Serve immediately and enjoy!

Guacamole Tips and Variations

  • Don’t make this too far in advance.  Avocados oxidize very quickly, meaning they will turn brown when the air hits the flesh.  The lime juice in this recipe helps delay that slightly, but the best way to keep your guacamole nice and fresh is to make it just before you plan to eat it.
  • Use ripe avocados for the best flavor.  Avocados that aren’t ripe enough are slightly bitter, and don’t have that buttery texture that ripe avocados do.  Overly ripe avocados are, well, mush.  Often they will have turned brown or spotty and are not so pretty to look at.  Perfectly ripe avocados will have some give if squeezed gently, but will still feel a bit firm.
  • Taste as you go.  Since the main ingredient here is one whose flavor can vary greatly depending on the ripeness, you’ll want to be sure to taste as you go, adjusting seasoning as necessary until you get it just how you want.
  • Experiment with other flavors. Sometimes you want to mix it up, or maybe you are having a brunch party and you want to serve a guacamole bar. A few of my favorite guacamole additions include sour cream, canned green chilis, Bacon Bits, pepitas, Salsa, Pico De Gallo, grilled corn, and feta cheese.

Storing Instructions

  • Refrigerator: The best way to store avocado is in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed directly on top of the guacamole.  This keeps the air from getting to the avocados which oxidize quickly, turning them brown.  Keep covered in the fridge for up to 5 days.
