Fresh Berry Lemonade

Take one sip of this homemade berry lemonade and you’ll be hard pressed to go back to buying store bought. The most time consuming step is juicing the lemons. Beyond that, you just need to make simple syrup and add your berries and lemon juice.

Feel free to make straight blueberry lemonade, strawberry lemonade, raspberry lemonade, or mix whatever you have on hand. Frozen berries work great and, unless it’s peak berry season, are often more flavorful than fresh. Best of all, this Berry Lemonade will last in the fridge for up to 5 days so make plenty.

Key Ingredients

  • Sugar – to make the simple syrup you will need white granulated sugar.
  • Water – you may need to add a touch more or less—always taste while adding the water. Remember that the lemonade should taste fairly strong before adding the ice because it will water down.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice – freshly squeezed lemons are ideal because they have the best lemon flavor, but bottled lemon juice will also work. You may also be able to find freshly squeezed lemon juice at your local grocery store.
  • Berries—you can use your favorite combination of fresh berries for this easy lemonade recipe or you can use frozen berries. If frozen, just let them thaw a touch and mash before adding to the lemonade. Make sure you add all of the mixed berry juice.

How to Make Summer Berry Lemonade

  1. Make a simple syrup. Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan.  Bring to a low boil, then remove from heat and stir until all sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the lemon juice and berries. Let the simple syrup come to room temperature, then pour into a pitcher.  Juice the lemons, strain, then add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and berries and mix.
  3. Add ice. Keep in the fridge until you’re ready to serve and then add the ice.  Enjoy!

Recipe Variations

  • Add a refreshing twist to your berry lemonade by muddling fresh mint leaves with the berries. Fresh basil would also taste delicious!
  • For a spicy version, muddle fresh jalapeño slices with the berries and lemon juice. Let the mixture sit for a while to allow the flavors to develop, then strain the mixture and combine it with lemonade.
  • If you like bubbles, add sparkling water or soda water instead of plain water. Serve over ice cubes and garnish with a lemon slice or twist.
