Homemade White Pizza Recipe

If you’ve ever been to a woodfired pizza restaurant, you’ve probably tried “pizza bianca,” or white pizza. With the growing popularity of more upscale pizza places, white pizza has become more and more popular, too. What I love about white pizza is that the flavors of the crust, the cheese, and the toppings are able to really shine through.

This white pizza recipe starts with our soft and chewy homemade pizza dough which is stretched onto a round pizza pan and then spread with this rich and creamy white pizza sauce. From there, just add your shredded mozzarella cheese and bake in a hot oven until the outside is nice and crisp.

Top with your favorite pizza toppings like red pepper flakes, fresh herbs, and sliced tomatoes. Below you will find more topping ideas and tips. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Key Ingredients

  • Pizza Dough – this homemade Pizza Dough recipe makes the most soft and chewy pizza crust. You could also use store bought dough, or even go super simple and use refrigerated pizza dough from a can.
  • White Pizza Sauce – our white pizza sauce is rich, creamy, and packed with Parmesan cheese and garlic flavor. It only takes a few minutes to prepare and is totally worth the little extra effort to use homemade.
  • Cheese – shredded mozzarella is my go-to. If you want to make a more traditional New York-style white pizza, you could also add dollops of ricotta cheese on top before baking.
  • Toppings – this is where you can get creative! I’ve recommended adding crushed red pepper flakes, fresh basil, EVOO, and sliced tomatoes to the pizza just after it has finished baking. You can feel free to try other toppings like Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, spinach, pepperoni, oregano, or however else you like to top your white pizza!

Recipe Tips and Ideas

  • Make it a traditional bianca pizza recipe. For a more traditional “bianca pizza” you can skip the white sauce altogether and cover the top with a layer of shredded mozzarella and dollops of ricotta cheese.
  • Add a little spice. Serve with chili oil or Italian hot sauce for dipping!
  • Make it even easier. If you don’t have the time to make your own pizza dough, try substituting refrigerated pizza dough. Just roll it out and gently press into a baking sheet before adding your sauce and cheese.
  • Try more toppings. White pizza tastes great with all kinds of veggies, herbs, and spices. Some of my personal favorite white pizza toppings are spinach, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, tomatoes, and fresh herbs. Fresh mozzarella and ricotta also taste amazing, in addition to using shredded mozzarella.

How to Make White Pizza

  1. Stretch your pizza dough. Stretch and shape your pizza dough into a 12″ round pizza pan.
  2. Cover with white sauce and cheese. Spread the white sauce evenly and thinly over the stretched dough up to about 1″ from the edge of the pizza all the way around. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top of the sauce.
  3. Bake. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese has melted. Remove from the oven.
  4. Add toppings and serve. To finish, add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, sliced fresh basil, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and fresh tomatoes. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best white pizza toppings?

Because white sauce has a much more mild flavor than red sauce, it will hold other flavors much better. Some of my favorite toppings for white pizza are spinach, chicken, tomatoes, mushrooms, arugula, roasted red peppers, pepperoni, and bacon bits. For cheeses, stick with white cheeses like mozzarella, Provolone, ricotta, Gruyere, and Parmesan.

What is bianca pizza?

Bianca pizza, which means “white pizza” in Italian, refers to any pizza that uses cheese or white sauce as its base rather than a traditional red pizza sauce or tomato sauce. The baked pizza is white rather than red—thus the name white pizza!

What’s the difference between white pizza and regular pizza?

The thing that makes a white pizza a white pizza is the sauce. White pizza sauce is more of an alfredo sauce rather than a typical red pizza sauce. The ingredients are—well—white! Ours is made largely with heavy cream and Parmesan cheese.
