Turkey Club Sandwich Recipe

A good turkey club sandwich is hard to beat. Loaded with layers of turkey, ham, bacon, fresh vegetables, and creamy mayo, it’s the kind of sandwich that turns a simple lunch into something a little more satisfying. Whether you’re making one for a quick weekday meal or serving sandwiches for a casual gathering, this classic is always a crowd-pleaser.

While traditional club sandwiches are often served as a triple-decker, this version keeps things simple with two slices of hearty sourdough bread and a few extra ingredients that make it even more delicious. The combination of savory meats, crispy bacon, creamy avocado, and fresh vegetables creates the perfect balance of flavors and textures in every bite.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • So much texture. This sandwich has it all—creamy mayo, chewy bread, crisp lettuce, crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, and plenty of meat.
  • It takes just a few minutes to make. After all, this is a sandwich. Once the bacon is cooked, it’s really just a matter of adding the ingredients in between slices of bread.
  • Extra layers. This recipe has all of the classic club sandwich ingredients, but adds a few extra as well. You can feel free to take ‘em or leave ‘em!

Key Ingredients You Will Need

  • Bread: my favorite bread for turkey clubs is sourdough. It’s still soft in the middle and easy to eat, but has a little more flavor to it than white bread. If you want to make your sandwich a double-decker, you can add an extra piece of bread to the center. Some people like their club sandwich bread toasted first, so feel free to do that before adding the mayo.
  • Mayonnaise: mayo adds flavor while keeping the bread nice and moist and helping things stick.
  • Turkey: sliced deli turkey is my favorite, and plenty of it! Roast turkey, or leftover turkey, will also work great.
  • Ham: adding sliced ham adds a little extra saltiness and depth of flavor. If you just want to use turkey, that’s perfectly fine, too!
  • Cheese: classic turkey clubs don’t always have sliced cheese, but I love cheese and usually add it. Cheddar is great, but you could really use any kind that you want. Provolone, monterey jack, Swiss, or munster would all taste great.
  • Bacon: any kind of bacon will taste great here—thick, thin, smoked, etc.
  • Tomato: a good beefsteak or heirloom tomato is my favorite.
  • Avocado: this is totally optional, but really beefs up the sandwich even more.
  • Lettuce: go for a nice green leaf lettuce, like crisp iceberg or romaine lettuce. You can use either whole leaves, or shredded lettuce.

How to Make a Classic Turkey Club Sandwich

  1. Build the sandwich layers. Spread mayo over each bread slice, then top with the turkey, ham, cheese, bacon, tomato, and avocado.
  2. Season. Season with salt and pepper, then top with lettuce and the other slice of bread.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best bread to use for a turkey club?

Go for a bread that is soft, but sturdy. A good white sandwich bread or sliced sourdough are my favorites. They need to be thin enough to be able to bite through but sturdy enough to hold in all of the toppings and moisture from the ingredients.

How do you make a double decker club sandwich?

If you want to make this a double checker sandwich, you’ll need 3 slices of bread for each. For the third (middle) slice, add mayo on both sides. On the bottom half, layer the lettuce, cheese, avocado, and tomato. Then on the top half, layer the ham and turkey.

Recipe Tips

  • In order to prevent a soggy sandwich, pat the tomatoes dry with a paper towel after slicing them.
  • For an authentic diner-style club sandwich, toast the bread and use a third slice in the center. Cut from corner to corner, then secure with toothpicks.
  • If you plan to use avocado, be sure and cut it at the last minute so that it doesn’t start to turn brown.
  • Don’t skimp on the mayo! Not only will it add flavor, it keeps the sandwich moist and acts as a sort of glue to hold things in.
