Grilled Peaches Recipe

When the peak of summer rolls around, the last thing you want to do is cook all day in a hot kitchen. That’s why some of our favorite summer desserts are either no bake recipes, or they feature summer fruit cooked super simply. Grilling peaches is a surprisingly delicious way to enjoy this seasonal fruit, and there are endless ways to flavor and garnish it.

For this recipe, I grill the peach halves over medium high heat and add butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon halfway through. This melts and caramelizes all over the sweet and juicy peaches making them irresistible. My go-to way to serve cooked peaches is with vanilla ice cream, but I’ve also given you plenty of other ways to enjoy grilled peaches below.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Peaches – be sure to find ripe peaches that are free of bruises. You can use white peaches or yellow peaches—cling-stone or cling free. They all taste great. The more you grill peaches, you may begin to discover different flavor variations that you prefer with white vs yellow peaches.
  • Olive Oil – this is to brush over the peaches so that they don’t stick to the grill. It also flavors them very slightly. You could substitute avocado oil if you prefer.
  • Brown Sugar – combine either light or dark brown sugar with the cinnamon to create a glaze that melts over the peaches as they grill. Honey would also taste amazing.
  • Cinnamon – cinnamon tastes great with brown sugar and peaches. Another flavor to try would be to substitute pumpkin pie spice.
  • Butter – the butter creates a rich sugary glaze that tastes so amazing with the sweet juicy peaches. If you want to make these vegan, feel free to use a vegan butter or vegetable-based margarine.

How to Grill Peaches

  1. Prepare the peaches. Wash the peaches, then carefully cut in half and remove the pits.  Using a pastry brush, brush the cut side of the peach with olive oil. Place the peaches, cut side down, on the grill over medium heat.  Brush the skin side with olive oil.
  2. Grill the peaches. Place peaches cut side down over the preheated grill, then brush the skin side with more olive oil. Grill over medium heat for 4-6 minutes, or until grill marks form on the cut side.
  3. Flip over and grill the other side. Use tongs to flip the peaches over, then add 1/2 tablespoon pat of butter and about 1 tablespoon of cinnamon brown sugar to each peach half. Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the brown sugar is melted and slightly caramelized.
  4. Serve. Transfer the grilled peaches to a platter.  Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and garnish with mint if desired. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you grill peaches on the stove?

If you don’t have a grill, or just don’t feel like heating yours up, you can cook peaches over a hot cast iron grill on your stovetop. Just season the pan with olive oil and preheat over medium high. Place peaches on top, then follow similar instructions for cooking as in the regular recipe. You may need to cook them for slightly more or less time, depending on your set up.

How can you tell whether a peach is ripe?

The first way to tell whether or not a peach is ripe is by touch. Very gently press the peach with your fingers. If there is a slight give, it is either ripe or about 1 days from becoming ripe. If it is still very firm, leave it out on the counter to continue to ripen.

Another way to tell is by looking at the peach. If it looks wrinkled, it is likely overripe. Or, if the color is still very pale it is likely not ripe yet. You want to look for a deep golden yellow color.

What is the difference between clingfree or clingstone peaches?

If you have ever cut into a peach and tried to gently twist it apart but it won’t budge, you have had a clingstone peach. These are peaches whose pits literally “cling” to the flesh of the fruit. Cling Free peaches have pits that are easy to remove with your hands.

How do you cut a clingstone peach in half?

This trick will save you a lot of bruised peaches! For clingstone peaches, be sure to slice them around the middle, rather than down the crack. Some call this the equator of the peach. When you do this, you should be able to give the peach a gentle press and pull them apart.
