This Italian Club Sandwich is a hearty lunch that’s loaded with Genoa salami, ham, pepperoni, cheese, veggies, pepperonicini, and chewy ciabatta bread. It’s the perfect sandwich to bring to a potluck or barbecue, or pack in a picnic basket.
If you are serving a crowd, making your own Italian subs is a super affordable way to go that’s just as delicious as ordering from your local deli, and takes just a few minutes.

Italian Club Sandwich
If you’re a fan of loaded deli sandwiches, this Italian club sandwich is about as good as it gets. Packed with layers of savory Italian meats, sliced cheese, crisp vegetables, and tangy pepperoncini, every bite is full of flavor and texture. It’s hearty enough to satisfy a big appetite while still being easy enough to throw together in just a few minutes.

One of the best things about Italian sandwiches is how versatile they are. You can keep things simple with a few classic ingredients or pile on your favorite meats, cheeses, and toppings to create the ultimate deli-style sandwich. This version combines some of my favorite Italian flavors, all tucked inside a chewy ciabatta roll that’s sturdy enough to hold everything together.
Recipe Notes
These sandwiches are perfect for making ahead so that you can easily toss them in a lunch box, picnic basket, or just have a ready-to-go lunch. Wrapped tightly and chilled for a few hours, the flavors meld together and the bread soaks up all of the yummy dressing.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It takes just 10 minutes to make. There’s no real prep involved with these—just adding condiments, meats, cheeses, and veggies to the sliced bread.
- Endlessly customizable. You can pick and choose the types of bread, condiments, meats, cheeses, and veggies that you like best.
- Perfect for picnics or taking on the go. These sandwiches can be wrapped up and tossed into a picnic basket or bag to bring along anywhere. They travel very well and can be eaten cold or at room temperature.

Key Ingredients You Will Need
- Bread: because there is so much packed into this sandwich, you need a bread or roll that will be able to handle it. I love the firm yet tender texture of ciabatta rolls. If the ciabatta that you find is larger than 1 sandwich portion, you can just cut them in half!
- Condiments: not only does mayo taste great, it also helps to hold everything inside the sandwich. This recipe also uses Italian dressing. Besides flavor, the dressing also adds a little extra moisture to the sandwich rolls. If you want something slightly healthier, olive oil and/or red wine vinegar work great.
- Sliced Italian Meats: This is really the star of the show. My favorite combination involves sliced deli ham, Genoa salami, and sliced pepperoni. Prosciutto, mortadella, or pancetta would also be great.
- Sliced Cheese: I like to use provolone cheese the most, but also like to add in a little extra mild cheddar, or even fresh mozzarella cheese.
- Veggies: There is a lot of meat and cheese in this sandwich, so it’s important to counter balance that with some crisp, fresh veggies. Lettuce is a given, but I also like to add tomato slices, thinly sliced red onion, and sliced pepperoncini.
How to Make an Italian Club Sandwich
- Prep the sandwich rolls. Slice the ciabatta loaf in half and lightly toast. Spread the mayonnaise evenly over the cut sides of the bread, then drizzle the Italian dressing over the bottom halves of the rolls.
- Build the sandwiches. Top each sandwich with ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, cheddar cheese, and lettuce. Season the tomato slices with salt and pepper, then add them along with the red onion and pepperoncini peppers. Top with other piece of bread.

- Serve. Slice each sandwich in half and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- To store these sandwiches for longer, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap. They can be stored in the fridge this way for up to 2 days. When you are ready to eat them, just remove the plastic wrap. If you are serving at a picnic or potluck, feel free to add toothpicks to them, too.
- If you want to make these double-decker club sandwiches, you will need three pieces of bread for each sandwich. Because of the extra bulk, use a slightly thinner bread like sliced sourdough, ciabatta or even just more thinly sliced Italian bread.
- It never hurts to serve these with toothpicks! The toothpicks help keep the sandwiches together and are a quick and easy way to make them look more festive.
- To turn these into warm sandwiches, skip the lettuce and tomato and bake the assembled sandwiches at 350 degrees F until the cheese is melted.
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerator: to store these sandwiches, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 2 days.
