How to Make Dough for Breadsticks
In a medium sized mixing bowl, or stand mixer, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast and mix well. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
Once your yeast has proofed, add the olive oil, salt and about 1½ cups of whole wheat flour. Using a paddle or dough hook, mix until all the ingredients are completely combined. Add in the rest of the flour, about a ¼ cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the edges of the bowl.
Mix on low speed for another 1-2 minutes, then cover and let the dough rest in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until about doubled in size (or wrap and store in the fridge overnight).
How to Shape and Bake Breadsticks
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Grease a baking sheet with olive oil or non-stick cooking spray.
Lightly grease your hands. Gently pull the dough out of the bowl and place in the baking sheet. Gently pull and press the dough until it covers the bottom of a large baking sheet (or two 9" x 13" baking pans).
Brush the melted butter on the dough, then lightly sprinkle with garlic salt.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bottom and the top are golden brown.
Let cool for about 10 minutes, then cut into 1½" strips with a pizza cutter and serve with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!
Notes
**For best results, use half whole wheat flour and half all-purpose white flour. Using full whole wheat flour will be a more dense and chewy breadstick.
